In my reflection, I explore the gap between AI’s marketed potential in education and its real-world impact, drawing on Selwyn’s (2022) critique of “AI theatre.” If AI-driven tools are often more about branding than true machine learning, what should educators consider when integrating these technologies? How can we evaluate claims of personalization to ensure they genuinely enhance learning rather than reinforce rigid, pre-programmed responses?
From an ethical standpoint, AI’s inability to replicate human cognition, empathy, and contextual understanding raises concerns. What challenges arise when AI assesses open-ended responses or supports diverse learners? How do we ensure educators remain central to instructional design, preventing an overreliance on flawed AI systems?
Equity is another critical factor. AI-powered proctoring tools have disproportionately flagged students from diverse backgrounds (Selwyn, 2022), highlighting systemic bias in training data. How can we design AI tools that prioritize fairness and inclusivity? Additionally, AI’s environmental impact, driven by immense computational demands, requires balancing technological advancements with sustainability.
Rather than rejecting AI, I argue for critical engagement. What might responsible AI adoption look like in K-12 education? Open-source AI could offer greater transparency and institutional control, reducing reliance on profit-driven commercial models. Empowering educators and students with digital literacy skills will also enable them to critically assess AI’s capabilities and limitations.
As Selwyn (2022) emphasizes, AI in education must not be accepted uncritically. Educators must take an active role in shaping how AI is used in learning environments. By advocating for ethical governance, fair practices, and sustainable innovation, we can ensure AI complements, rather than undermines, the values of education.

In my initial reflection, I questioned how we can critically evaluate AI’s claims of personalization and ensure educators remain central to instructional design. Upon further exploration, I now see that data analytics plays a crucial role in this process. By systematically analyzing student engagement and learning outcomes, we can move beyond “AI theatre” (Selwyn, 2022) and assess whether AI genuinely enhances learning or merely reinforces pre-programmed responses.
Key Data Considerations for Decision-Making
As a leader in digital learning, the most relevant data to collect includes:
• Student engagement metrics (e.g., participation rates, time on task, interaction patterns).
• Assessment performance (e.g., AI-powered grading accuracy, consistency over time).
• Student feedback on AI-driven interventions and overall learning experience.
These factors align with data-driven decision-making (DDDM) frameworks, which emphasize input, process, outcome, and satisfaction data to guide educational change (Marsh, Pane, & Hamilton, 2006). For example, tracking the accuracy of AI-powered assessments over time can help identify biases or limitations that human oversight might miss. Additionally, the analytics information shared in this course can provide insights into student interaction patterns, helping to identify whether AI tools support or hinder learning.
From Data to Action: What Questions Can Analytics Answer?
Using learning analytics, educators and institutions can explore key questions such as:
• Are AI-driven assessments improving student learning, or do they reflect systemic biases?
• How do students engage with AI tools, and what patterns emerge in their usage?
• Which interventions (adaptive learning tools, teacher support) lead to better learning outcomes?
From a policy perspective, analytics can also inform decisions on AI adoption, ensuring that policies are guided by empirical evidence rather than assumptions.
Addressing Ethical and Privacy Concerns
While data analytics holds great potential, ethical concerns around privacy, consent, and bias must be central to its implementation. Research highlights the risks of educational triage, where predictive analytics may unintentionally label students, leading to exclusion rather than support (Prinsloo & Slade, 2014). Additionally, studies have shown that AI-powered surveillance tools have disproportionately flagged students from diverse backgrounds, reinforcing systemic biases (Selwyn, 2022).
To mitigate these risks, institutions must adopt transparent data policies that prioritize:
1. Explainability – Educators and students should understand how AI-driven decisions are made.
2. Accountability – Institutions must take responsibility for errors or biases in AI-generated insights.
3. Informed consent – Students should have control over their data and its use.
Using Data for Change: The Role of Analytics in Advocacy
Analytics can be a powerful tool for advocating for technology or policy change. For example, predictive analytics in higher education has been successfully used to identify at-risk students and improve retention rates when coupled with timely interventions (Sclater, Peasgood, & Mullan, 2016). In a K-12 context, AI-enhanced learning dashboards could provide real-time insights into student progress, allowing for more adaptive instructional strategies.
However, without a clear ethical framework, such tools risk becoming mechanisms of surveillance rather than empowerment. Thus, responsible AI adoption in education requires not only data but also critical engagement with its implications. By advocating for fair and sustainable data practices, we can ensure that AI complements rather than undermines educational equity and inclusion.
Conclusion
As I argued in my original post, AI in education should not be passively accepted but critically engaged with. Data-driven decision-making, when applied ethically, can help ensure that AI serves as a tool for equity, transparency, and meaningful personalization rather than an instrument of bias and surveillance. By advocating for ethical data practices, we take an active role in shaping AI’s role in education rather than allowing it to shape us.
